BurlyCon Announces 2014 SISU Scholarship Winner Jane Wildwood!
Hawaii-based burlesquer and heart surgery survivor granted tuition

BurlyCon, in partnership with burlesque performer and producer Gorejess, is thrilled to announce it has granted its first-ever “Sisu Scholarship: Tenacity in Adversity” award to Hawaii-based dancer and heart surgery-survivor Jane Wildwood.

“Sisu” is a Finnish word for tenacity. The scholarship is meant to honor a burlesque artist who, like Jane, has shown “tenacity in adversity.”
As a child, Jane was diagnosed with a heart condition, SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia), which she says is “basically a fancy name for heart palpitations.”
Despite doctor’s warnings, Jane continued to dance just as she had done since the age of three. Jane fought to finish dance recitals following episodes where her heart rate would exceed 200 beats per minute. As a teen, she chose to undergo a risky corrective heart surgery. It was a success.

Jane continued dancing modern, ballet, jazz, and Broadway styles. Currently Jane has been dancing with the Kit Kat Club Cabaret in Maui since 2010. She is hoping BurlyCon will help her kick start her burlesque career.

“I will be the wide-eyed, grinning ear-to-ear newbie with a large bag of shoes and notebook in tow,” said Jane. “I won’t be taking this opportunity for granted whatsoever. I only wish that I could be in two places at once so that I could take double the classes!”

BurlyCon and Gorejess developed the Sisu Scholarship in memory of Gorejess’ mother, Kathleen (Kathy) Ruth Johnston, as a tribute to her “sisu” after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and named the scholarship after her Finnish ancestry.

“My mom believed in BurlyCon, as do I. She loved reading all of the class syllabi and handouts I received,” said Gorejess. “She felt BurlyCon gave the community, and me, a chance to receive the knowledge and substance of what burlesque, as an art, is truly made of, and comes from.”
As the winner, Jane receives full BurlyCon tuition and coverage for boarding and travel expenses.

“I want to communicate how appreciative I am to be given this opportunity to learn from the world’s top burlesque performer. It is a dream come true,” said Jane. “I feel like a rose that’s blooming, but more importantly, growing some dangerously seductive thorns! BurlyCon 2014, here I come!”

Congratulate Jane in person at BurlyCon 2014! BurlyCon is Oct. 9-12th at the DoubleTree Hotel in Sea Tac, WA. Visit www.BurlyCon.org for more information. Register today!

BURLYCON CELEBRATES RECORD-BREAKING YEAR OF GIVING!

BurlyCon supports Dixie Evans, BHoF, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade & More!

2014 is proving that BurlyCon is more than an annual weekend of sparkly striptease education – its mission is to make burlesque bigger and better year-round! Through charitable giving, educational sponsorship, and community outreach, BurlyCon is pulling out all the stops to preserve and promote the art of the ecdysiast all year. This year’s record-breaking year of giving back heats up this summer with sponsorship of the LEGEND-ary Burlesque Hall of Fame Finishing School, continued support of the naughty and nautical Coney Island Mermaid Parade in New York, and an out-of-this-world BurlyCon “Pastie Fleet” appearance in the Seattle Pride Parade to honor GLBTAQ rights pioneer (and Star Trek’s beloved Captain Sulu) George Takei!

BURLYCON FOSTERS LEGENDARY BURLESQUE-DUCATION AT BHOF

On June 5th-7th at the Burlesque Hall of Fame (BHoF) Exotic World Weekender in Las Vegas, budding burlesquers and expert ecdysiasts alike learned striptease skills from bump and grind icons at the BurlyCon-run BHoF Finishing School. The Finishing School offers a weekend of intimate classes taught by burlesque’s most treasured educational resource: the greatest LIVING LEGENDS of striptease from the mid-twentieth century. Highlights from this year’s class-act courses were Toni Elling’s “The Three Ps: Parade, Pose & Peel”, Gypsy Louise’s “The Elegant Negligee,” Judith Stein’s “The Stein Strut”, Tai Ping’s “Latin Moves”, and Holiday O’Hara’s “Passion, Power, & Presence in Performing (Or: How a Woman in a Wheelchair Can Own a 1,000 Seat Room).” Classes are curated by the co-Directors of Education for BHoF, Miss Indigo Blue and Jo “Boobs” Weldon, who are also co-Curators of BurlyCon! Fabulous BurlyCon alums and committee members Darlinda Just Darlinda, Peekaboo Pointe, and Lola Love also assisted with the program this year. Stay tuned to see what LEGEND-ary offerings BurlyCon has in store for next year’s BHoF Finishing School – as well as what legends BurlyCon will be bringing to teach at BurlyCon this fall!

BURLYCON GIVES TO THE 32nd ANNUAL CONEY ISLAND MERMAID PARADE

Mermaid-lovers, ocean-worshippers, and fans of all things naked and nautical gathered in Coney Island, New York for the 32nd annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade on June 21st. BurlyCon proudly continued their annual charitable contributions to the sea-side event, the largest art parade in the nation, in celebration of parade-producer Coney Island USA’s fantastic non-profit work to preserve historical American circus sideshow and burlesque culture. BurlyCon media director, Penelope Rose, was sent to preside as a judge over the 1,500 salty, sequined artists who marched in their most risqué and ridiculous aquatic-inspired garb. Her advice for those eyeing a pageant prize: bribe the judges!!!

BURLYCON’S “PASTIE FLEET” HONORS TAKEI IN SEATTLE PRIDE PARADE

The BurlyCon community donned their sparkliest Spock ears to boldly go where no merkin has gone before in support of GLBTAQ equality in the 40th Annual Seattle Pride Parade on June 29. BurlyCon embarked on an out-of-this-world, Star Trek-inspired “Pastie Fleet” to honor GLBTAQ rights pioneer (and Star Trek’s beloved Captain Sulu) George Takei, the parade’s Celebrity Grand Marshall. The “Pastie Fleet” offered the crowd a sneak peek of what’s in store for this year’s BurlyCon dance “Lust in Space”!

BURLYCON DONATES TO HONOR BURLESQUE ICON DIXIE EVANS

We did it! BurlyCon and countless burlesque performers, friends and fans helped the Dixie Evans Fund reach its fundraising goal to help pay for beloved striptease icon Dixie Evans’ outstanding medical bills, memorial celebration, and final resting place at the Westwood Cemetery in January. Beloved burlesque icon Dixie Evans, “The Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque,” and founder of the Miss Exotic World Competition and Miss Exotic World Museum, passed away in August of 2013. The international burlesque community came together to create and celebrate Dixie Evans Week during August 26 – September 1st of 2013, holding more than 30 live performances, nearly 100 classes, and taking countless online donations to benefit Dixie. This March, a case in the Westwood Cemetery Room of Prayer, near Marilyn Monroe’s grave, was secured for family, friends and fans to pay their respects.
