Artistry as Agency: Why It Matters and Why We’re Claiming It Now
The start of a new year always brings a natural pause—a moment where we look at who we’ve become and who we’re becoming as burlesque artists. This year that pause sparked an important reflection about the heart of our work and the role we play in this ever-evolving industry.
From that reflection came a simple but powerful guiding theme: Artistry as Agency.
What Artistry as Agency Means
Agency is the ability to make choices that shape our lives, our craft, and our future. Agency as a concept is both deeply personal and deeply communal.
While personal agency is about the choices an individual can make, communal agency describes the shared conditions that either support or limit those choices. In other words, agency doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Burlesque artists can only fully exercise agency when the community, systems, and structures around them make space for it. These communal conditions expand an artist’s ability to choose, lead, and direct their own path.
Without communal agency, personal agency can become constrained, even if the artist themselves is capable and ready.
Why We’re Claiming This Now
The last few years have transformed our world, our industry, and our communities. Shifts in politics, the economy, and culture are affecting our industry and art as a whole. Artists are holding both uncertainty and possibility. And across burlesque, we see people using their artistry to rebuild, reconnect, and reimagine their lives.
Artistry as Agency names what’s already happening, and it helps us lean toward what’s next. It’s why BurlyCon makes room for community care and development. We want every burlesque artist who comes through our sparkly convention doors, whether they’re new to burlesque or decades into their journey, to walk away with more agency than they had when they arrived.
What This Means for 2026
Throughout the year, you’ll see this idea show up in our programming, our communications, and our convention planning. Some ways we’re doing this:
- Highlighting more stories of how artists use their craft to shape their lives
- Streamlining information for presenters, volunteers, and leaders in our materials
- Launching a snazzy new website
- Strengthening scholarships and partnerships
Burlesque is powerful not only because of the routines we create, but also because of the people we become through creating them.
Artistry as Agency is a reminder that our work matters onstage, offstage, and everywhere in between. It’s an invitation to step into 2026 with intention, compassion, and connection as a burlesque artist. We’re grateful to walk this path with you.
Here’s to the year ahead!
