In Memory of Toni Elling

BurlyCon is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Burlesque Legend, Toni Elling.

Many of us built close, personal relationships with her, and over the fifteen years we knew her, she enriched our lives—and burlesque itself—with generosity, love, and depth.

As the first Legend of Honor at BurlyCon 2008, Toni helped shape our organization from its earliest days. She brought extraordinary depth as both a storyteller and a teacher and shared her knowledge openly. Ms. Elling offered not only the lessons of her experience, but also the hard-earned insights behind her success. She showed up for everyone, recognizing both the value of her history and the responsibility that came with it.

Ms. Elling carried herself with profound self-respect and creative integrity, and she extended that same respect to everyone around her. Through her actions, she modeled a graciousness always worth emulating.

She stood proudly as an icon for BIPOC members of the burlesque community, claiming that space with visibility and intention. She accepted recognition with grace, and she spoke plainly when the truth needed to be heard.

Legends are a finite and diminishing resource. When we make time to know them, we deepen our understanding of—and honor—the history of burlesque.

As BurlyCon moves forward, we actively connect emerging performers with their elders by bringing Legends into our spaces to teach and to be heard.

Through these connections, we hope you will build relationships as rich and transformative as the ones so many of us shared with Miss Toni—even as we know there will never be another like her.
