Glitter on the Dance Floor: BurlyCon Dance Party Memories

When the Classroom Closes and the Dance Party Opens

For many attendees, the Friday night dance party marks a shift in rhythm. During the day, BurlyCon hums with note-taking, technique drills, thoughtful discussions, and hallway conversations about craft. By evening, that energy transforms.

The dance party is not separate from the learning. It’s an extension of it.

Burlesque is performance, yes, but it’s also style, music, community, play, and embodied joy. Because of that, the Friday night dance invites attendees to step out of the classroom and into expression. Each year’s theme, in turn, gives everyone permission to experiment with persona in a low-stakes, high-glitter space.

Here, students dance next to instructors. Meanwhile, legends mingle with first-time attendees. At the same time, collaborators meet future collaborators. And sometimes, you finally try out the look you’ve been sketching in your notebook all weekend.

In this way, the dance reminds us that burlesque is not only something we analyze or refine, but also something we actively live.

Over the years, the dance floor has held feathered headpieces, latex unicorn horns, impeccably tailored suits, and more rhinestones than any sensible person could count. Beyond the costumes, it has held reunion hugs, spontaneous choreography, and the kind of laughter that only happens when artists gather without competition.

For that reason, the Friday night dance party becomes part of the curriculum.

And so, every year, when the DJ hits play and the lights dim just enough, we remember exactly why we came.

This year’s theme? Mystical Menagerie.

Prepare to be unicorned. For the first time in BurlyCon history, you can purchase tickets just for the evening events. That means your lover, best friend, or favorite human can join the magic without committing to a full weekend pass.

Evening-only access includes:

  • The Vintage Meet-and-Greet
  • Movie Night and Storytelling
  • And, of course, the DANCE

Because sometimes you just need glitter, music, and a packed dance floor full of burlesque brilliance.

Now, let’s take a little trip down memory lane . . .
