As announced earlier this year, Lola Love is ending her reign as the Executive Director at BurlyCon, and we will miss her influence, insight, and skill as an organizing force.
Burlesque pioneer, innovator, and founder of Hawaii’s Pretty Peacock Productions, Lola brought a calm “get it done early” ideal to BurlyCon in 2013, as the Director of Programming. Lola brought passion and commitment to her involvement, leveraging her resources and relationships to expand the team’s productivity and creativity. As a Queer BIPOC single parent, Lola’s life experiences and perspectives contributed practicality, humor, patience, and persistence to the role.
When Lola took over as Executive Director of BurlyCon in 2018, there was no way she, or anyone, could have known that the organization — and indeed, the world — would face challenges unlike any seen before. During this uniquely difficult time, she met these challenges head on, turning adversity into inspiration, obstacles into innovation, and the experience of a live in-person weekend–made untenable by the pandemic–into a year-round virtual burlesque education experience.
With her strong leadership, inclusive vision, and bold initiatives, she rallied a global team of volunteers who worked tirelessly over the course of the past three years to make BurlyCcon’s offerings available to a larger audience than could ever fit in a convention center.
We look forward to the future of BurlyCon, in which Lola’s influence will continue to thrive through the digital initiatives she shepherded and as we return to in-person events.
Keep up with Lola (if you can!)
